Julia Dujmovits – Austria – Snowboarding

Julia is a 30 year old snowboarder for Sulz, Austria. PyrongChang will be her second Olympics. She won the gold medal in Parallel Slalom in Sochi in 2014. This year her sole event will be Parallel Giant Slalom. She begins qualification runs at 10 am today.

Julia is a survivor. 17 years ago, a chance decision undoubtedly saved her life. Standing in line waiting to take a train to the top of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier in the Austrian Alps, along with her youth snowboard team, her brother suggested that they take the gondola instead. They thankfully did. Minutes later the train caught fire while inside a tunnel on the mountain. 155 people, including her entire snowboard team perished in the fire. Returning to snowboarding following that tragedy was extremely difficult for the young, then 14 year old, Julia. But she overcame her fear and did, excelling at the sport.
