Gabriela Soukalova is a 24 year old biathlete for the Czech Republic. Sochi is her second Olympics as she competed in two events in Vancouver in 2010 finishing well out of the running in both events (16th in a relay and 60th in an individual). However, in Sochi with one event to go, Gabriela has already had a much more successful Olympics this go round. She credits a lot of her recent improvement to a decision to switching training from the Czech women’s team to the Czech men’s team.
She started out with an inauspicious 28th finish in the 7.5 km sprint. However things picked up from there. AFter just missing medals by finishing fourth in the 10km Pursuit and the 15 km Individual, she came home with silver in the 30km Mass Start and the men and women’s mixed relay.
Tomorrow she’ll be going after a gold medal in the women’s 4x6km relay.
She was literally born to be a biathlete as both her parents are biathlon coaches (her mother, Gabriela Soukalova-Svobodova, won a silver medal in cross-country skiing at the 1984 Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo).
Here she talks about her parents and their influence on her career choice.
Not only is she good looking, a talented skier and shooter, but she’s got some pretty good pipes too.
She made a bet before the 2013 World Championships, that she would sing to the crowd if she won a medal at the event. After winning a bronze medal in the mixed relay she sang “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt to the 20,000 spectators.
Here’s a video of the James Bond song “For Your Eyes Only” that she made with some other biathletes.
While I haven’t been able to find the typical Oglympic type photos for Gabriela, she’s so photogenic that just a bunch of pics of her face and eyes are good enough for me to include her. She’s a head turner, one of the girls who would catch her eye even during competition.
Here she is during competition.
