Svetlana Khorkina – Russia – Gymnastics – Vol III no 4

At 25 years old and 5’5”, Svetlana is considered by many to be too old and too tall for the sport (notice how she towers over her fellow competitors in this shot from the gold medal ceremony at last years World Championship. But at Athens this year, the evergreen Russian will attempt to become the first non-teenager to win the all-around gymnastics title at the Olympics since 1968.
Khorkina has been dubbed queen of the uneven bars for her domination of the discipline, in which she has won five world titles, six European titles and two Olympic gold medals. Her latest victory was just last May when she claimed her last European title. If she can nail down another Olympic crown on the apparatus she will be the second to ever accomplish that gymnastic feat.
But it is her specialty event which has proved her undoing in the all-around at the Olympics, with falls on the bars costing her in 1996 and 2000. Another fall on the uneven bars cost Russia a team gold in Sydney.

The uneven bars have been kinder to Khorkina in the individual event at the Olympics. In Sydney she became the first gymnast to defend her Olympic title on the apparatus since Romania’s Nadia Comaneci won the beam in 1976 and 1980.

In 2003 Khorkina added to her 1997 and 2001 triumphs to make gymnastics history by becoming the first gymnast, male or female, to win three world all-round titles. Khorkina is the reigning world all-around champion, but she has never won an Olympic gold in the event.

In 2002 she equalled Comaneci’s record of three consecutive European Championship all-around titles.
She is so good that she has several gymnastics moves named after her including two vaults, two flight elements on the uneven bars, a tumbling skill on the balance beam, and a flight element on floor exercise.

Svetlana posed for these photos for the Russian edition of Playboy as a teenager back in 1997. She doesn’t shy away from the limelight and very much likes to draw attention to herself. As she says in this article “I want to be recognized from a half-mile away.” Well these photos will certainly make people take notice.
